SOLAS – Container Weight Verification

SOLAS - Container Weight Verification

SOLAS stands for the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea. It sets minimum safety standards for ships, including requirements for construction, stability, machinery, electrical installations, lifesaving equipment, fire protection, and communications. The convention applies to all ships engaged in international voyages, as well as to certain types of domestic voyages.

Situations like container stack collapses, vessel instability, dock injury, injury to workers, cargo/ship damage, insurance claims, and any environmental impact have led to the urgency of getting an accurate container weight.

Therefore, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has implemented the Safety Of Life At Sea (SOLAS) in order to verify container weight only as a condition to load marine cargo in ships.

Om Saptarshi has an active task force working on the SOLAS Weight Verification. We have set up internal sites for each region to submit specific information and also keep you up-to-date on the SOLAS weight verification requirement rules.

SOLAS and Verified Gross Mass (VGM)

Verified Gross Mass (VGM) is a requirement under SOLAS for the verification of the gross mass of containers before they are loaded onto a ship. The purpose of it is to ensure that the weight of containers does not exceed the maximum permitted weight capacity of the ship or the port infrastructure.

VGM refers to the weight of a packed container verified by the shipper or their authorized representative. It is provided to the carrier prior to the loading of a container onto a ship. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) made it mandatory for shippers to provide the VGM as a safety measure to prevent accidents and ensure proper stowage and balance of containers on ships.

Compliance with VGM requirements is a critical part of the shipping process. Failing to provide accurate VGM can result into fine, penalty and delay in shipment.

VGM Weight Certificate

Om Saptarshi has created a weight certificate for submitting VGM information for full-container-load (FCL) cargo and a separate weight certificate for less-than-container-load (LCL) cargo.

For FCL shipments, the certificate must carry:
